Stella Jasper, a self-centered, free-spending socialite in suburban McLean, Virginia, is jolted into reality when her husband, a well-connected Washington lobbyist, abruptly disappears and leaves her cash-strapped, snubbed by her friends, and under investigation by the FBI. Angered and on her own, she slips away incognito and follows his trail to a small town in the Kentucky mountains, where she meets B. J. Matson, a local man who has been a lifelong loner. Together, they unexpectedly play a behind-the-scenes role in solving a mystery that fuels a major scandal in the White House and throws the presidential election campaign into disarray. Set in Washington, D.C. and rural Kentucky, the book provides a vivid portrayal of characters in both places.

ABOUT

Bill Neikirk has given us a gem of a thriller here that has it all—White House intrigue, scandal, spies, campaigns—and who better to weave the plot than someone who has been there and done that, a great reporter who covered everything Washington offered up for over four decades. This novel tops the real story, and that's hard to do.”

Mike McCurry, White House Press Secretary, 1995-98

No one is better equipped to capture the intrigues and dramas of Washington than Bill Neikirk, one of the sharpest journalistic observers of the nation's capital in generations. Now he translates his vast experience covering presidents and pretenders into a gripping runaway tale with cinematic pacing and relentless suspense. His characters are three-dimensional reflections of real life.”

Peter Baker, White House correspondent, The New York Times
